This puzzle was more challenging than recent Saturdays, all thanks to clever clues, not obscurities. When three quarters were done, the SE corner was still virgin! As highlighted in the comments, there were some obscure uses of familiar words, but they are all supported by the dictionary, I think. Thanks to the setter for a very enjoyable puzzle. This blog is posted a week later, after the competition closes. Clues are blue, with definitions underlined. It’s a while since I got to blog an Izetti.

I am writing this article at a cafe around the corner from my house. Children are playing in the park across the city square and Nirvana is blasting on the cafe radio. Last night I stayed in with my host family and watched European singing competitions on the living room television. Tonight some local friends and I are going to a bar to hear local rock bands play covers of our favorite songs. Before you ask; no, I do not live in in the capital of my country of service.
I actually live in a relatively small town in the south of the country, consisting of around 35, people if you count the surrounding villages and farms.

Britain is helping to train the militaries of over a dozen countries involved in serious breaches of human rights abuses, it has been revealed. The Independent reported at the weekend that the UK was as recently as March providing training to the armed forces of Belarus, a dictatorship where pro-democracy protesters have faced repression in recent months. The UK provided sniper commander courses to soldiers in Bahrain, which cracked down on peaceful dissent in , virtually eliminating all opposition to its government, according to NGO Human Rights Watch.
It also trained Saudi Arabian forces in fighter jet and tactical weapons use, while the country was engaged in an aerial bombardment in Yemen that the UN and aid agencies says has created a humanitarian catastrophe. Egyptian forces were given a commando training course, while in the UK helped train China’s officer corps.
Britain is in fact training the militaries of the majority of countries on its own human rights watch list: 17 out of 30 on the so-called “human rights priority countries” register. Keep in mind that this is a culturally significant tradition dating back hundreds of years. On Friday, May 6th my host family told me they wanted to take me to a nearby village called Babaj Bokes for the day. They said there was an important festival taking place. The holiday was traditionally Christian and is especially important in Eastern Orthodoxy, but it has been adopted and altered by several Muslim countries.
It is one of the major holiday for the Roma community. When we arrived at the village we climbed up to the temple or tyrbja on the hill overlooking Babaj Bokes. There we found pens with hundreds of sheep. Before leaving we were given pieces of blessed fabric to carry with us for luck. The day involves ritual animal sacrifices and the distribution of the meat to the poor.
One-thousand sheep were sacrificed. All in just one day in this tiny village. The sheep were killed in groups of 50 and then skinned and butchered immediately. The sheep are carried alive one-by-one to the temple, where their throats are slit and the blood is sprayed on the walls.

The next time you say goodbye to someone joining the Peace Corps remember they could be coming back with more than some awesome stories.
Woman B: I moved to East Africa five years ago to work for a local health nonprofit for a year. We stayed together when I left for the Peace Corps and remained in a relationship for about a year and a half. Woman B: I had a partner in the U. Woman C: When I left, I was dating someone I was having sex with five times a week but wasn’t in love with. It just trailed off because I knew I was moving.
Woman A: The “dating scene” here is starkly different from the scene in the Bay Area, where I grew up. I now live in a very Catholic, socially conservative country and city. I think I always held a stereotype of Latinos as being sexual and flirtatious before moving here, but that is only half true — people can be very flirty and make sexual jokes out of anything, but when it comes to actually talking seriously or honestly about sex and having the sex itself, [my experience is] they tend to be quite conservative.
With my partner, who is a local, it took a long time for us to be on the same page in talking about what we wanted and what we thought about sex. He was also very slow to try new things. That was very surprising to me given the stereotype of a “Latin lover.

Living abroad in a foreign culture with values completely different from America can be quite frustrating at times. Living in isolation and away from others that look or feel like you can get really lonely at times. We are human, an as such, we crave human contact and affection. For example, casual dating is non-existent in Armenia since dating is supposed to lead to marriage! Dating a local can lead to damaged reputations if the relationship does not end in marriage so it can be very tricky situation.
In my service in Romania quite a few PCVs married the host country nationals and it worked out great.
Dating in the Peace Corps. There are 3 basic varieties of Peace Corps relationship: those with someone back in the US, those with fellow volunteers, and those with host country nationals. I would say that here in Burkina types 1 and 2 are far more common than 3. I have 2 sitemates in my town, one of whom is dating a fellow volunteer that he met in stage and the other of whom is maintaining a long distance relationship with her boyfriend from the US.
I personally am not dating or planning on it , so we make a nice little trifecta of options right here in one place. My answer to this question is based solely on observation and discussion with those who are dating. So I could be wrong. Is it difficult to get a date here? Or perhaps to put it another way, hooking up is easy, but developing any sort of meaningful relationship is extremely challenging. We get warned at great length on the various schemes and scams during stage.
Yes and no. It depends on a lot of factors: your site, how you comport yourself, etc.

When family and friends say goodbye to someone joining the Peace Corps they expect him or her to return in two years or longer with a lot of stories, maybe some interesting clothes, a plethora of pictures and perhaps a different view on life. It’s natural to assume a Peace Corps Volunteer will go through some changes. For a few volunteers that change can include coming back to America with a husband or wife!
The first thing I remember was a guy raising his hand and asking the Peace Corps official, “Is it true that 80 percent of volunteers come back.

With diplomats stuck inside barricaded compounds or loath to venture from expatriate residential ghettos, a Peace Corps volunteer is likely to be the only representative of the U. As the State Department cuts back on its public diplomacy and cultural exchange programs, the Peace Corps predominantly young volunteers wind up carrying more and more of the responsibility for demonstrating that the United States still has good intentions abroad. That puts the Peace Corps and its volunteers in an awkward position.
The Peace Corps was created as a separate, independent agency so that it would not be subject to short-term foreign-policy objectives. Volunteers arent trained or expected to represent the U. When the Peace Corps is characterized as an effective diplomatic weapon, it is thanks to the goodwill that volunteers generate toward the American people, not toward official U.
