The book details how Davis overcame racism and bigotry to sing, dance and act his way to the top of a career that spanned six decades and included 40 albums, seven Broadway shows, 23 films and countless nightclub and concert performances. His father put him in black face and claimed he was a year-old dwarf known as Silent Sam, because it was illegal for performers under 16 to be on stage. Because of their skin color, they were forced to stay in colored boarding houses while on the road, but Davis’ father told him they did that because other people were jealous of their act. Talent earned us respect. He tempered all the humiliation I felt from my unit. He distracted me from all my rage, all my anger. I wouldn’t have survived the army without him. The star’s daughter wrote that the two bonded over a sandwich between shows.

In , Sammy Davis Jr. Wonderful on Broadway and had a popular nightclub act with his father and uncle called the Will Mastin Trio. For the rest of his life, he would wear a glass eye. Hollywood starlet Kim Novak certainly noticed him. His friends Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh obliged by inviting both of them to a party at their house. This bit of idle gossip was far from harmless.
An affair between Novak and Davis had the potential to destroy both of their careers. In , interracial marriage was illegal in half the states. Most Americans were against it. A Gallup poll from showed that only 4 percent of Americans approved of interracial marriage. The national atmosphere was fraught with racial tension. As a black man, Davis had been stopped from dating white women before, but this time was different.

Precise ages of hydrothermal monazite, allanite and rutile from alteration zones surrounding the above deposits indicate that these minerals crystallized 40—70 million years after volcanism. The ca. Such fluids were also responsible for local sulfide remobilization. Monazite and rutile are spatially associated with chlorite and sericite alterations at Kidd Creek.
Their young ages indicate that these originally syngenetic mineral assemblages may have been significantly affected by regional metamorphism. Formation of monazite at all three deposits studied was a result of significant REE remobilization during metamorphism. The discrete character of syn-metamorphic hydrothermal activity in different units of the same deposit, as well as its synchroneity among different, widely separated deposits, requires a mechanism for episodic injection of heat and fluid into the crust on a regional scale.
These activities are broadly coeval with, and probably related to, plutonism within adjacent metasedimentary subprovinces and middle to lower crustal metamorphism in the Superior Province. He played an instrumental role in discovering the novel hormone FGF23 during this time, and since then his laboratory has been funded to study FGF23 and its co-receptor Klotho. He is currently the David D. The White laboratory focuses on the molecular genetics of diseases associated with hyper- and hypophosphatemia and the resulting skeletal disease with a particular focus on the bone hormone FGF23 and interactions with its co-receptor alpha-Klotho aKL.
Work involves a unique FGF23 knock in animal model of autosomal dominant hypophosphatemia, as well as conditional and inducible genetic strains of mice. His group also undertakes parallel in vitro cell culture work in tissues derived from transgenic mice and skeletal and renal cell lines. Trainees coming through the White lab will undertake studies investigating the mechanisms underlying the target actions of FGF23 and a novel form or circulating aKL at the tissue level and through conditional in vivo approaches.
Trainees will perform studies to test the regulation of FGF23 and aKL expression in bone and kidney cell models, respectively, including promoter and transcriptional assays. Trainees will also learn how to perform outcome measures in animal studies using biochemical analyses, dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry DXA , and histomorphometrics, as well as a variety of hormone ELISAs.

The Associated Press. Helen Gott hung back from the dance floor. She was a quiet kid, one of a handful of black freshmen in at Syracuse University. She’d joined those friends on an excursion to the Tippin’ In, a nightclub with a primarily black clientele at McBride and Madison streets, in the old 15th Ward. Many older students were already there, including members of the track and football teams. Helen soon found herself in conversation with a young man who shattered her image of athletes as loud, pushy and abrasive.
It was her first step toward falling in love with Ernie Davis. She was attracted, she said, to the way Ernie was deeply masculine while always being gentle and soft-spoken. Later that year, Helen would be named “weekend queen” of the freshman class, an honor celebrated at a football game. She has a feeling that’s when Ernie noticed her again. They eventually became a couple, a time still precious to Helen, almost 50 years later. We would hang out as a group at the Tippin’ Inn; some people were just really great dancers, and we’d play the music and dance a lot and everybody had a great time.
We’d go to a park Thornden Park, near SU when we just wanted to walk and get away by ourselves, and there was an Italian restaurant we loved near campus; that’s where we had our final meal together.
