Leah Donnella. What is love? Baby don’t hurt me. Nicole Xu for NPR hide caption. Is it really true that a good black man is hard to find? This week, we’re taking on some long-lasting stereotypes about black-on-black love. I am an attractive, social young black woman from Austin and I can’t seem to land a black man. I support and participate in interracial friendships and romances so much so that strangers frequently comment on the college-brochure-cover level of diversity going on in my circle , but I have always desired and expected black love like my parents, grandparents and great-grandparents had. I would not say I am waiting for a black man, but the older I get, the more weddings I attend where my brothers or cousins marry a white woman, the seemingly intentional lack of eye contact I receive while black men sidle up to my non-black friends in the club, the more I feel it will never happen for me.
With Interracial Relationships, We’re Down for the Swirl When it’s Good for the Black Girl
Sexual racism is an individual’s sexual preference for specific races. It is an inclination towards or against potential sexual or romantic partners on the basis of perceived racial identity. Although discrimination among partners based on perceived racial identity is characterized by some as a form of racism , it is presented as a matter of preference by others.

Black men are far more likely than black women to marry outside of the race — and more likely to get married period. Is it time for black women to expand their search for love? More than a decade ago, I was having dinner with a dear friend who is white. We were talking about our hopes for our eldest children, including dreaming about their perfect mates. But she stopped me. Why was I — a progressive, reasonably tolerant supporter of diversity — balking at the thought of my son in particular having an interracial marriage?

What do tennis star Serena Williams, U. Kamala Harris and businesswoman Mellody Hobson have in common? But despite these real-world examples of interracial relationships, a Pew Research Center report found that black women are the least likely group of women to marry, especially outside of their own race. Despite this, Judice said race was not an important factor for most of the people she interviewed for the book.
Black women are the only group of women in America who cannot take for granted that if they seek marriage to a black man that there will be an ample supply of available men from which to choose.
In , 67% of white women in the US between the ages of 25 and 54 were married, compared with only 34% of black women. This column.
But when I do, I mostly stick to shows with a focus on romance. Whether in reality shows like Love Island and The Bachelorette or fictional series like The L Word and Modern Love , I am constantly finding women like myself—women of color—left out of romantic lead roles. Instead of being on the receiving end of a healthy romantic relationship, they often play the friend, the roommate, or the one who is undeserving of healthy love. The show follows Mickey, a young white woman living in Los Angeles who struggles with alcoholism and sex addiction.
Despite her very apparent flaws, she has no problem attracting men and ends up in a relationship with a guy named Gus. The recently cheated-on Gus is newly single and still coping with his breakup. Like other men on the show, he takes a deep interest in Mickey, despite her chaotic lifestyle. But when black and brown women tend to be chaotic in film, similar to Mickey, they are not successful in the world of dating or particularly sought after.
Like many of the rom-com shows and movies I indulge in, Love is lacking in female characters of color. Not a single one plays a lead role in the three-season series.

The choir of Black female thought leaders and celebrities pushing Black women to date white men has gotten larger. She interviewed 60 men and women to get a feel for their experience in an interracial relationship, asking about the highs and lows, how race factored into it and what led them to date outside their race in the first place. Judice makes one thing clear, however; the purpose of her book is NOT to tear down Black men as suitable partners, though that may be the criticism of some. Rather, she says there are just not enough Black men to go around thanks to factors like higher mortality and high rates of incarceration due to systemic racism.
She also noted that Black men are twice as likely to marry outside their race while Black women were the least likely to marry outside their race. Many of the women in the book said they were pursued by white men as well.

By Gretchen Livingston and Anna Brown. Since then, intermarriage rates have steadily climbed. All told, more than , newlyweds in had recently entered into a marriage with someone of a different race or ethnicity. By comparison, in , the first year for which detailed data are available, about , newlyweds had done so. The long-term annual growth in newlyweds marrying someone of a different race or ethnicity has led to dramatic increases in the overall number of people who are presently intermarried — including both those who recently married and those who did so years, or even decades, earlier.
Overall increases in intermarriage have been fueled in part by rising intermarriage rates among black newlyweds and among white newlyweds. At the same time, intermarriage has ticked down among recently married Asians and remained more or less stable among Hispanic newlyweds. Even though intermarriage has not been increasing for these two groups, they remain far more likely than black or white newlyweds to marry someone of a different race or ethnicity.
For newly married Hispanics and Asians, the likelihood of intermarriage is closely related to whether they were born in the U. The pattern is similar among Asian newlyweds, three-fourths of whom are immigrants. Significant growth in the Hispanic and Asian populations in the U. At the same time, the share of white newlyweds declined by 15 points and the share of black newlyweds held steady.
And members of smaller racial or ethnic groups may be more likely to intermarry because relatively few potential partners share their race or ethnicity. But size alone cannot totally explain intermarriage patterns.
Professor encourages Black women to ‘Intentionally’ date outside their race
A few weeks ago a girlfriend of mine, who happens to be a black woman, sent me a screenshot of an exchange she had with a man she came across on an online dating app. I’m accustomed to friends sharing their ‘WTF’ moments, and generally I love living vicariously through their dating experiences. My friend was in the early stages of a chat with a man she’d matched with and he straight away asked about her ethnicity — projecting his assumptions of her by focusing on her race.
I made a documentary about the role race plays in online dating, Date My Race , a year ago.

Growing up in a predominantly white area, my options were limited. As I was navigating my teens, love was shoved down my throat on TV; I watched my friends pair off at house parties, and I started to become even more aware of the need to find my perfect match. I carefully curated him in my mind. He was tall, authoritative, kind, and loving, but I never thought about what colour he would be. Aged 16, I entered my first interracial relationship.
The topic of race never came up. I was number two, possibly even three, but definitely a secret. However, since moving to New York two and a half years ago, the men I attract mostly happen to be white. I suspect it has to do with the neighborhood I live in, the dating apps I use, and the industry I work in. These men are typically very socially aware and would probably describe themselves as liberal, feminist, and woke.
While dating outside my race has opened my eyes to different cultures and new experiences, it has also come with a lot of fetishizing and expectations of my character.
